Scholarships

At UPS for DownS we are excited about the opportunity to give young people in our community assistance in pursuing their life goals. We will award 6 individual scholarships totaling $15,000 this year through our scholarship programs. Scholarship applications are being accepted from now until April 1, 2012.

Katie MacDonald Memorial Scholarships:
 Two $2,500 scholarships will be awarded to individuals with Down syndrome who are pursuing educational or job training opportunities beyond high school.
 
Two $2,500 scholarships will be awarded to individuals who are pursuing a junior college, undergraduate, or graduate degree in a disability related field.
 
Eric Martinez Memorial Scholarships:  
 
One $2,500 scholarship will be awarded to an individual with Down syndrome who is pursuing educational or job training opportunities beyond high school.
 
One $2,500 scholarship will be awarded to an individual who is pursuing a junior college, undergraduate, or a graduate degree and has a sibling with Down syndrome.
 
 
Applications must be postmarked by April 1, 2012
Scholarship awards will be announced no later than April 22, 2012

Why does my friend with Down Syndrome act differently than other kids?

People with Down syndrome have difficulty with language and talking.  Many kids want to interact and play with their friends, but don't know how, are afraid they won't be understood, or afraid they will be told "no, you can't play". Some kids with Down syndrome get overwhelmed when too many things are going on at the same time.

Do people with Down syndrome have feelings?

Yes. Just like everyone, people with Down syndrome have feelings. They can feel happy, silly, sad, sorry, or upset - just like you. People with Down syndrome enjoy friends and family and can be hurt when someone teases or makes fun of them - just like you.
